Whether you choose to set up as a sole trader, limited company, or partnership will influence your tax liabilities and legal compliance obligations.

Context of Course

Delegates will consider what structure will best suit their business needs, and the legal considerations of different legal structures.  Delegate will learn the key elements of the following legal structures; Sole Traders, the definition of Sole Trader, the Legal position of a Sole Trader, registration requirement of a Sole Trader, tax implications of being a Sole Trader.


Partnerships, the Definition of a Partnership (the Partnership Act 1890), the Legal positions of partners, registration requirements of a Partnership, tax implication of being a partner, Limited liability Partnerships.  Limited Companies, Registration with Companies House, the legal position of being a Director, filing requirements of Limited Companies, Tax implications of being a Director.


Non-Profit Organisation and the requirements of Charitable Status, the registration requirements with the Charities Commission, the Legal positions of Trustees, the reporting requirements of Charitable organisations, other non-profit models.

Social enterprises and Co-operatives, the meaning of a Social Enterprise, examples of Social Enterprises, the legal and registration processes, the taxation positions of Social Enterprises

Who's it for?

This programme is for individuals who are at the beginning of their business journey or are considering setting up their own business and need an introduction to some of the key issues involved in business structures.  There are no requirements for previous qualifications. There is no formal assessment, the Learner will receive a Certificate of Attendance on completing the course.
